Workshop Description
Classroom teachers are the first line of defense in a school's response to an emergency event, and the actions taken by these individuals will influence the outcome. This interactive workshop will provide opportunity for group problem solving related to a number of timely topics. Participants will be provided with practical ideas and techniques to help plan for and appropriately respond to classroom and school emergencies.
Intended Audience
Administrators, Teachers, Counselors, Social Workers, School Nurses, Support Staff, Safety Coordinators, School Resource Officers
Instructional Objectives will include:
- Understand the impact of personal and professional liability related to school safety and security
- Understand the strategies, concepts, and tasks associated while planning for school emergencies
- Understand how to conduct a safety audit of an individual classroom or school
- Understand a staff's responsibility related to threatening or escalating or violent behavior
- Understand how to de-escalate violent or aggressive behavior
- Understand how to use tabletop exercises to prepare for and, ultimately, test an emergency response plan
